Z zawodu jest jubilerem i projektantem ekskluzywnej biżuterii, dwa razy odniósł sukces w cenionym w tajskiej telewizji quizie naukowym „Fanpantae” („Real Fans” w 2007 i 2008 roku)… Bez wątpienia uchodzi za jedną z najjaśniejszych gwiazd azjatyckiej konchistyki, zaś Phuket Island Shell Museum oraz Bangkok Seashell Museum stały się wizytówkami Jego pasji.
Co napędza tę pasję?
Odpowiedź odnalazłem śledząc treść wywiadu z Jomem, zamieszczonym na łamach „Bangkok Post” z 2009 roku, a przeprowadzonym z okazji otwarcia Bangkok Seashell Museum:
„My father always taught me that nothing belongs to us forever, as we all have to die one day. So we should focus on the things that bring us happiness, and share them with people around us. It’s such a waste if what you love is only kept for your personal viewing. It’s appreciated so much more if you get it out in the open. Running a private museum for me is not done for profit – it’s for the sheer joy of putting smiles on peoples’ faces…”

„My name is Jom Patamakanthin. I am a second son of Mr. Somnuek Patamakanthin, a well known shell colletor near Rawai Beach, on Phuket Island, Thailand.
My father has collected seashells for more than 50 years, from his childhood, and we currently extablish seashell museums around Thailand and probably some parts of the world in the near future, if we are able to!
Our collection is rich for specimens from Thailand, Andaman Sea, South China Sea, Arafura Sea, and Somalia, locations where our fishing boats go trawling in the deep, further more, we are also interested in land and freshwater species, truly, not less than the marine species!
We collect shells mainly for the knowledge of mollusks, to transfer to the next gen. and our goal is to establish artistic & educational shell museums, easy to approach, simply underatandable for youths, and unique in style, our lives are for studying the never-ending stories of the Phylum Mollusca!
We collect huge amount of fresh and dry shells mainly those left-over as secondary produces from the nets, turn them into beauties and buy-sell-exchange them with friends around the world, and we travel the world as frequently as we are able to, to search for new specimens, select few top-class shells, and place them gently into our displays at our museums.
Personally, I admire shells because they are produces of LOVE by MOTHER NATURE, they have lived and evolved long before our ancesters stepped on earth, with respect, I humbly draw and learn to develop my drawing just for the LOVE OF SHELLS…. I dream to draw shell people and all shells around me, for me, SHELLS ARE ART!”
